I wish you all the best for the WOSONOS UK 2012 that is happening this week.

I know that our friends Cecilia, Martin, Claudia, Corina, Adriana, Lisa...

will keep alive the flame of WOSonOS Chile 2011.

I'm also coming to London (8-15 Oct) and am searching for a place to stay. I could also share a room if suitable. I just want a place at walking distance from Stoke Newington Town Hall. Hello: I am very happy to know that I going to se new opn Space facilitaors and that we will sharing a lot together! I am looking for a place to stay close to the event if possible not expensive. Welcome! I'm just back from doing a three day open space in Jordan. We are gearing up towards the next stage of WOSonOS and it would be great to have your support. If you send me your email I'll join you into the basecamp group and you can be part of the team in whatever way seems appropriate. Dear Phelim,

I´ve just joined OpenSpaceWorld in search of Open Space adventures. I´ve read Harrisons book, and practised OST once with a group of 20 British and Zambian volunteers, and now I´m hungry to have some experiences with diverse groups of people to deepen my understanding and develop my practise. I´m hoping to go to WOSonOS and the pre-learning event with my partner, Elena, and I´ve written to Kirsty regarding negotiation for price and if we can miss the final day (yes I know it´s absolutely pants, but I´ll be celebrating my marriage with family in Nottingham on Sunday 14th). 

In short, I was wandering if there´s something I/ we can do to participate in preparations and/or delivery of WOSonOS?

I am excited to inform you that our WOSonOS 2012 website is now live, ready to welcome you here to London in October for the 20th World Open Space on Open Space.  At the site there are a number of things to check out. I think you are putting some interesting points, and at least one that strongly resonates with me, namely when you say “And there's something that has always bothered me about the world of Open Space practitioners: there's little room for dissent. Others may disagree, but that's what I've noticed, and experienced personally on many occasions.” That is a very interesting point that I would like to see posted at the OSLIST or in the main blog of this NING.

In what concerns WOSonOS-2011, I was present in Berlin in 2010 and it was clear that the decision to organize WOSonOS in Chile was passed to Juan Luis Walker that appeared there asking for that and strongly and passionately made is point. JL Walker would later get help from other folks in Chile. But the stick was given to him, to lead the process and to no one else! I know that his leadership was later questioned by others of the people he invited to join him, and he was very disappointed, by the time previous to the event, especially as he didn’t felt support – on the contrary – by some of the “representatives” of the OST worldwide community.

It was also at WOSonOS-2010 in Berlin, that Matilda, in representation of the “Improbable” showed enough passion and responsibility, to convince the folks assembled to accept that the WOSonOS-2012 would take place in London and that Improbable would lead the organization.

I have followed, from a distance, many efforts they have made to make that organization in Open Space and publicly inviting others to participate in the organization meetings. Of course I don’t know the details…

But I know life and I have organized many events and know that a lot of decisions have to be made and never all the people agree with everything. Not event, quite often, those that seem to lead and “to be in charge”…

So I suggest, Jack, that you (and others that felt excluded) to join or rejoin the organization and the event. You or they can even offer to convene a session at WOSonOS on “WOSonOS 2012 organization” or, more generally, on “organization of WOSonOS events”…

I, for one, felt honored to be invited to initiate the cloud source invitation for WOSonOS 2012 in Portuguese, and I will do that as soon as I can. For the others I can’t talk…

PS: Written on April the 25^th, when we celebrate in Portugal the restoration of democracy, in 1974…

Jack,

As an answer to your comments. I would reassure you that Improbable have never been anything other than explicit that we were leading and hosting this event. In fact when people have been unclear about this we have gone to pains to clarify this. However we are aware that we can't do this on or own and also did not want the event to put off people who didn't see themselves as part of the arts community or who have been practicing OS for years.

Unfortunately the fact that we are leading on this probably means there  is a bottom line which some people don't like... Yes we will be making decisions about how the event is run and organised which some people may not agree with. As Seth Godin says "if your not pissing some people off you're probably not doing your job. and your right Jack it's amazing how defensive people get when someone takes some initiative." like we have.

I would say in answer to your second comment it's about finding out how to "collaborate" which is perhaps challenging for some people who like to work solo a lot of the time. 

We have used open space to gather support and collaborators but that does not mean we won't be making decisions to ensure the quality of the event and and the quality of what its nature and atmosphere will be. Now some people may want to join us and help us and others may not like that and think that's taking over. 

There's always your two feet I say and to be honest I want to make sure we have some fun and  not have endless discussions about whether  we are actually leading on this project or not.

We are and I'm very excited about it!

You've inspired some interesting thinking for me, Jack - as I read the words you chose and think about what I have observed over time. Perhaps because of my own way of being and navigating through the world - I feel it not as dissent but as different viewpoints. Not as defense or attack but as responses sharing personal viewpoints. Not as conflict but as diversity. To me, diversity and abundance mean no need to agree or share the same experience or understanding of something - to value each person for their unique truth and experience. To witness others' truths as just that. And to me it's like being in an Open Space event - going to what has interest and passion, moving in and out of conversations or projects that inspire or intrigue, always learning.  It's because we are all so different that I value even more this interesting international community we have - different styles, ways of looking at things, points of view - all interconnected by our appreciation and practice of both the process, and the values (guidelines, principles) of Open Space. Thanks for (in my time zone as I write this) giving me some interesting morning thoughts...

Thanks for your detailed response. Much appreciated.

I think my question is probably to do with the nature of co-creation—what does it mean to co-create? This is a question that has occupied my mind for some 20 years, and continues to do so.

If I conceive a scheme, for an event, a product, a service, a work practice, and I solicit input from others, is that co-creation, or is it ... not sure what words to use here ... Design research? Concept enhancement work?

There's no doubt that Improbable do great work. I've only met Phelim once, when he invited me to a venue in Holloway Road, north London, to review his plans for one of the early Devoted & Disgruntled events. I was greatly impressed by the creativity, care, and attention to detail that he and his colleagues had put into the design, planning and organisation of the event. I've seen, at close quarters, the passion, commitment and energy that you describe.

Like you, I've been working with Open Space for decades. And there's something that has always bothered me about the world of Open Space practitioners: there's little room for dissent. Anything that resembles dissent tends to get shot down in flames or trigger a defensive reaction. Others may disagree, but that's what I've noticed, and experienced personally on many occasions.

I'm still not sure if I'll be taking part in WOSonOS 2012. Regardless, I'll support it in whatever way I can.
